Surgical Conditions Treated and Our Approach to Patient Care

Dr. Heniford, in his leadership role at the Endeavor Abdominal Health and Hernia Repair program, works in a group whose approach goes far beyond the technical performance of an operation. Every patient—whether coming for their first hernia repair or facing a complex, recurrent abdominal wall defect, deserves care that is thoughtful and individualized . They strive to understand your condition, your goals, and your life outside the operating room.

From the first point of contact, we emphasize communication, honesty, and a shared decision-making process. Some patients may benefit from prehabilitation - including weight optimization, smoking cessation, diabetic control, physical therapy, or nutritional strategies - while others may need urgent or specialized care due to pain, infection, obstruction, or functional decline. For family physicians referring patients to our care, we maintain a close partnership to ensure continuity before and after surgery.

Our team combines decades of surgical experience, global leadership in abdominal wall research, and a track record of training surgeons around the world. The result is care that is both technically advanced and deeply personal.

Conditions That We Treat

  • Inguinal hernias (first-time and recurrent, both with and without mesh)
  • Ventral and incisional hernias
  • Umbilical and epigastric hernias
  • Recurrent, very large, or complex abdominal wall hernias
  • Mesh-related complications, including chronic infection, pain, or fistulas
  • Lateral abdominal wall hernias
  • Parastomal hernias
  • Diastasis recti with functional limitations
  • Core muscle injuries
  • Rectus abdominis disruption or traumatic muscle injury
  • Lumbar hernias
  • Abdominal wall tumors and soft tissue masses
  • Enterocutaneous fistulas related to hernia or previous mesh
  • Abdominal wall defects after open abdomen, trauma, or emergency surgery

We offer both open and minimally invasive (robotic and laparoscopic) approaches tailored to each patient. We also specialize in treating patients who have had multiple prior operations, failed mesh repairs, or have been told elsewhere that their hernia cannot be fixed.

If you're a patient seeking help or a provider looking for a trusted referral partner, we’re here to support you with expertise, compassion, and honesty every step of the way.
