About Dr. Todd Heniford
Dr. Heniford grew up in rural South Carolina and completed his undergraduate degree and played football at Clemson University. After attending the Medical University of South Carolina, he completed his surgical residency and research fellowship at the University of Louisville and a fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. He has been on the faculty of the Cleveland Clinic and, subsequently, the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C., where he served as a Professor and Chief of Gastrointestinal and Minimally Invasive Surgery, Director of the Carolinas Hernia Center, and Fellowship Director for the Advanced GI Surgery Fellowship. In 2025, Dr. Heniford was recruited to build the Endeavor Health Abdominal Health and Hernia Repair Program in Evanston, Illinois.
Dr. Heniford has authored 650 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and edited three books. He and his research fellows have won more than 70 prominent surgical research awards, including multiple research project of the year awards from SAGES, the American College of Surgeons, the American and European Hernia Societies, the Association for Academic Surgery, among others. He has developed successful surgical apps that have been downloaded in more than 135 countries world-wide and has multiple international patents. Google Scholar reports that Dr. Heniford’s peer-reviewed papers have been cited 30,000 times in other peer-reviewed manuscripts and an H-index of 93 (average number of citations for each paper published).
Dr. Heniford has been the recipient of the MedStar Georgetown University Lifetime Achievement Award, European Hernia Society Lifetime Achievement Award, the American Hernia Society Nyhus-Wantz Career Achievement Award, and named Medical Innovator of the Year by the Business Journal. He was awarded the first international invited Board Certification in Abdominal Wall Surgery by the European Board of Surgery. Dr. Heniford has Honorary Memberships in national and international surgical organizations in Asia, Europe and South America. He is a past-President of the Americas Hernia Society. Eight of Dr. Heniford’s trainees have been elected as President of the Americas Hernia Society. He has been recognized with numerous Mentor of the Year and Educator of the Year awards by the residents in the Department of Surgery at the Carolinas Medical Center., including in both 2023 and 2024. In 2025, the American Hernia Society established the AHS B. Todd Heniford Education Award to be given annually to an individual surgeon whose contributions to education in hernia surgery have been transformative.
Dr. Heniford is the founder of a 501c3 charity, Barrel Aged Charities (BarrelAgedCharities.org), that supports prostate cancer detection, research and health equity.
